Cllr Phil Harris Hough Green Ward Halton Borough Council

Budget Special - June 2010

June proved to be a bad month for many Halton residents...and the rest of the country.

In addition to the Building Schools for the Future programme being put on hold - the govt has announced the privatisation of the education system - otherwise known as Free Schools.

This was preceeded by the decision on the Mersey Gateway also being delayed until the autumn.
Both the BSF and Mersey Gateway decisions have major implications for Halton and we will have to wait and see the outcome.

In the meantime, the Coalition govt has been busy doing more damage. Some that affect Halton are highlighted below.

Before the election result - the Lib Dem's predicted the Tories would increase VAT. They were right. Then they voted for it.

The Tory Budget is full of cuts that will hit families hard.

George Osborne delivered a Budget that will throw people out of work, hold back economic growth and damage the public services we all rely on. The Tories have broken their promise to be fair, with tax increases and benefit cuts that will hit hardest at the people who can least afford it.

In the weeks ahead the detail will become more clearer. What is clear is it wasn't fair and it was all made possible thanks to the Liberal Democrats.

Tory - Lib Dem Govt axes free swimming for children & pensioners - Halton included.

Funding for the current scheme has been cancelled early from the end of July, 2010.

This means it will come into operation just in time for this year's summer school holidays, not the best timing, to say the least.
