Unless he's just as clueless about policing as other subjects, we won't really know why David Cameron is obsessed with American policing methods, for a while. Perhaps it's an attempt to let overseas security firms get a foot in the door, so they can privatise policing like they are planning to let the NHS be put on a market footing ? Bill Bratton could be well placed for that.
Police forces around the world already share best practice, so it's a bit bizarre why the UK's prime minister seems obsessed with American policing methods. Do Cameron's spin doctors think it will appeal to voters perhaps ? Has he been watching too many US TV Crime programmes ?
The source of the idea for Police Commissioners looks suspiciously like it was adopted from the USA - so maybe it's not too unexpected to find him looking for another daft idea from that direction. The current Tory-led coalition govt is still pushing ahead with cutting 16,000 police officers - while spending £100 million on another tier of politicians. Most people would prefer more police.
Not content with trying to rubbish police officers as timid - he has now brought in a retired so-called 'supercop' from the USA as an advisor. for a recent news article.
Perhaps as Cameron has also implied that there isn't a good enough pool of candidates in British policing for some jobs, the case is there to suggest the same about politicians ? They could make a start with the lightweight Cameron. As a prime minister he is rapidly showing how shallow his judgement is.
If the Coalition's plan for police commissioners goes ahead we can expect even more political interferrence in policing, with posturing and rhetoric affecting policing, by politicians who get elected as commissioners.
Labour opposes the introduction of police commissioners as unneccessary and has opposed the politicisation of UK policing.
Labour has also called for a public inquiry on the recent riots so ordinary people not just 'experts' can give evidemce.
Sir Hugh Orde - Chairman of the UK's Chief Police Officers - has questioned the record of 'supercop' Bill Bratton.
Furious officers - from the head of Scotland Yard to rank and file street cops - have quite rightly lined up to attack the Prime Minister and Home Secretary Theresa May for saying they had ordered the crackdown on the rioters.
There was also anger that Cameron used his Commons statement to accuse the police of being too timid to take action against the thugs and looters. for a recent news item.
Meanwhile - ministers are pressing ahead with police cuts and the politicisation of UK policing by elected police commissioners.
Each police commissioner will have a taxpayer salary of £132,000. The cost of the election alone in Cheshire will be over £1 million - the equivilent of dozens of front line police officers, who are due to sacked in funding cuts.
